VisionPoint & Alliant Energy discuss the value of generational diversity training...
Excerpts from “4 Generations, Many Differences” (The Gazette, Feb. 13, 2007, Story by Carly Weber):

For the first time in recent history, members of four generations are working side by side in the workplace.

  • “The challenge is getting these groups to understand each other and work together productively in a positive way,’’ said Laura Bernstein, 43, President of VisionPoint Productions, a training development provider specializing in ethics, compliance, diversity and leadership training.
  • Walt Hargraves, 62, a manager at Alliant Energy, says, ‘‘I may look at someone from a Generation X or Y who’s saying, ‘It’s really important for me to work maybe 10 hours a day, four days a week,’ and for me that would just not fit. It’s not a sign of laziness. It’s just different priorities, and that’s not bad.’’
  • Jake Hoerner, 24, a workers’ compensation claims specialist at Alliant, says, ‘‘At the core, we all want the same thing. Our way of going about it is just different.’’

Getting employees to realize that lesson is a goal of generational training. Companies that embrace generational differences can retain employees, appeal to applicants and increase productivity. ‘‘There’s a mutually beneficial synergy when generations can work together,’’ Bernstein said. ‘‘And the commonality is that, in the workplace, members of all generations want to be respected.’’

Recent Supreme Court decision makes retaliation prevention training critical. In June of 2006, a decision handed down by the United States Supreme Court made it significantly easier for an employee to successfully prove that he or she is a victim of unlawful retaliation. Experts predict this will result in a significant increase in retaliation lawsuits. VisionPoint has developed a free PowerPoint presentation that you can use to help ensure a retaliation-free workplace. For more information, visit
