- 10.6 million firms are at least 50% owned by a woman or women
- Women-owned firms employ 19.1 million people and generate $2.5 trillion in revenues to the U.S. economy
- Between 1997 and 2002 women-owned businesses saw their revenues grow by 32%, compared to an overall rate of 24%
- The number of women-owned firms with employees has expanded by an estimated 28% between 1997 and 2004, three times the growth rate of all firms with employees
- Women-owned businesses are just as financially strong and creditworthy as the average U.S. firm and are just as likely to remain in business
- Women owners typically emphasize relationship building, as well as gathering facts; and they are likely to consult with others to gain buy-in on significant decisions
- Women business owners are philanthropically active: 70% volunteer at least once per month; 31% contribute $5000 or more to charity annually
- According to the Center for Women’s Business Research executive director, Sharon Hadary, “Women are creating jobs. Their expansion rate in hiring is faster than in the creation of new businesses.”
