There’s a distinction between affirmative action and diversity that has to be made.
Affirmative Action involves going out with a strategy for getting people from groups that are not currently in your organization and historically not been in your organization, and finding ways to bring them in to satisfy a number or level in your head that says "we've done it."
Diversity is an ongoing process of increasing your capability to deal with differences in the workplace.
The best of all worlds would be to use that understanding as a way of attracting people to the organization which could result in what you might consider to be an affirmative action gains. But you need to be clear about what you’re doing and also why. You also need to be very clear about why you do not have these groups in your workplace. So an examination of your own culture is perhaps the first step to achieving a fair workplace.
